I have my desktop connected to one of my systems via a long coaxial cable. From my desktop I can select my desktop speakers or the digital output which runs from my PC to the DAC in my system. So any app on the desktop can play via my audio system. This is just a regular desktop, not a audio specialist system, that came with realtek audio built in. It sounds really good FWIW and I don't have any need to change it.
But I have a second system and possibly multiple others where I don't want the computer to be any part of it. Connecting a formatted hard drive with my music collection on it seems ideal to me. I think I can do that with the Node.
My question to you is how do you control what comes out of the Chromecast and Node devices? Also can multiple node devices share a single hard drive? And lastly the Chromecast seems redundant, I'm assuming it is included because not all services are supported with the Node software?

I use an Android tablet and an android phone to control the Node and the Chromecast. Also I control the Chromecast through my Samsung Chromebook 2 when I want to cast browser tabs to the chromecast.
That is correct, Google Music wasn't supported through the Node Software. I've since added a 3rd device the Sonos Connect. So I can stream FLAC through the Deezer elite streaming service. Of note I was surprised the Sonos supports Google Music and Bandcamp which is great for me. So the Chromecast is redundant with the exception of still having the ability to cast browser tabs (web site embedded internet radio or what have you).
I setup the Node to connect to a Network drive which is really just an external hard drive shared on my home network, I assume any other Node can talk to the same drive.
do you have to get up to manually select the input?

I use two DACs in my system. Both have remotes, no way am I getting off the couch after a few beers. Just like a beached whale ;)
