I have a Bluesound Node. And a Google Chromecast hooked up to the DACs. I like to fiddle with OS etc.. I just don't think it is worth the hastle anymore with these devices taking place of the laptops.
I don't even know why I am posting this, what benefit is left with the laptop as a source nowadays?

I have my desktop connected to one of my systems via a long coaxial cable. From my desktop I can select my desktop speakers or the digital output which runs from my PC to the DAC in my system. So any app on the desktop can play via my audio system. This is just a regular desktop, not a audio specialist system, that came with realtek audio built in. It sounds really good FWIW and I don't have any need to change it.
But I have a second system and possibly multiple others where I don't want the computer to be any part of it. Connecting a formatted hard drive with my music collection on it seems ideal to me. I think I can do that with the Node.
My question to you is how do you control what comes out of the Chromecast and Node devices? Also can multiple node devices share a single hard drive? And lastly the Chromecast seems redundant, I'm assuming it is included because not all services are supported with the Node software?

I use an Android tablet and an android phone to control the Node and the Chromecast. Also I control the Chromecast through my Samsung Chromebook 2 when I want to cast browser tabs to the chromecast.
That is correct, Google Music wasn't supported through the Node Software. I've since added a 3rd device the Sonos Connect. So I can stream FLAC through the Deezer elite streaming service. Of note I was surprised the Sonos supports Google Music and Bandcamp which is great for me. So the Chromecast is redundant with the exception of still having the ability to cast browser tabs (web site embedded internet radio or what have you).
I setup the Node to connect to a Network drive which is really just an external hard drive shared on my home network, I assume any other Node can talk to the same drive.
do you have to get up to manually select the input?

I use two DACs in my system. Both have remotes, no way am I getting off the couch after a few beers. Just like a beached whale ;)
To you, probably nothing. To others who may want to try out different players, DACS, equalization, flash or html 5 based audio sources, EVERYTHING.
For example can you play Wolfgang's Vault with your BlueNode setup?
understood with other web content.
I can cast my chrome tab to my chromecast to enjoy that stuff however, which is why I run a Node and a Chromecast. I hooked up the Chromecast with no screen, just running it into a HDMI to digital audio out converter into a DAC. Works pretty well for that. And in your question it works in place of having a laptop dedicated directly plugged into the USB.
From the advice here, I'll save myself the headache. I'll leave everything as is. Thanks for the thoughts.
Do you just have the Bluesound Node or do you also have the Vault? I'm curious where you keep your music library.
I'm a strong advocate of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." If you're happy with your current set up why not just enjoy the music?
That said, I'd be interested in any observations you may have about the Bluesound approach to audio.

I have just the Node. an external HDD library of FLAC files shared on the network as a SMB drive. It really is great. Also subscribe to Spotify as the node is compatible with that too :)
"It really is great."
Hey, if it's great then enjoy it!
Maybe you could use your laptop as a source for a second system in your den? Get some modest, powered pro speakers and enjoy tunes while you work! I highly recommend the JBL LSR305s, but I would wait a bit before buying. They seem to go on sale every few months (the last sale finished at the end of August) and you can pick them up for about US$225 to US$250 a pair. Get some stands to lift the tweeters to ear height and even plugged directly into your laptop you'll be amazed at how much music and fun there is in those little boxes.
If you have a Guitar Center in your neighborhood check out what they have on offer. Guitar Center has a nifty 30 day MBG that can take a lot of the stress out of buying new gear.
