A good friend of mine bought one. He is going also purchase the optional battery power supply.
It easily bests the Squeezebox Touch in quieter backgrounds, a more relaxed sound, and a more natural presentation, and mind you, the Squeezebox is quite good.
It is stripped down with no WiFi, no display, and custom made firmware and O/S. It works with any DLNA compliant software, cross platform, or LMS, and a few other ways.
The only weakness is it only has a USB output. At $495, sound wise, it is a steal.

I agree. I got one. It easily beats Touch. Furthermore, it can act as HQPlayer NAA client. Use it with iUSB power, you can very good streamer.
I have the iUSB stuff with my SBT already (iUSB,Gemini, iPurifier, iLink). This is sounding ever more tempting...
I was impressed by what I heard. I see posters here whining and moaning that there is no SBT replacement, and when I mention this and the Sim MIND they complain about no display etc. This is a GOOD thing. These units are also not tethered to LMS.
You have the iFI battery supply?
As you said, it is good thing to have no noisy display to affect the sound. I use local made LPS for the power supply. It is much better than stock power supply.
Thanks.
Now you are really agitating that upgrade itch...
Please report back after your friend got the battery supply. Wonder if the battery ps needs a linear PS to avoid the noise of a switching wall wart.
Thanks again.
