Just the C drive, the music is on an external USB RAID. It is an old P4 2.6 w/XP. It worked flawlessly running LMS sending wirelessly to the network. NEVER a drop out. I'm going to just redo Windows on a new HD but will be on the lookout for a newer desktop too.

even with W8.1 and the newer DH61DL Intel Boards.
With WinXP on this board, I lost all usb mouse control after leaving it turned off for several months. I was able to boot up but could not do anything.
So, I now make sure that there is a CDRom restore option enabled/
installed.
By coincidence, what happened to you happened to me, my trusty XP machine also died. It was a purpose-built server with fanless power supply, eSATA, etc.
Researching the state of music servers today is enough to give one a brain aneurysm, with many people vehemently proclaiming one is better than the other, etc. Some key words I've run into:
Jplay, JCAT usb card, SoTM USB card, JRiver, C.A.P.S., Windows 2012 Server, Audiophile Optimizer, various batteries and linear power supplies for various sound cards and Mobo's, good old Foobar, Foobar4JplayMini, various forms of Mac Mini, various forms of uber-expensive "audiophile" servers, etc, etc.
To buy myself some time to research things further, I retooled an old 12" Lenovo Ideapad with Via Nano processor and Windows XP. Fabulous thing is it has an expressCard slot, for which I got an eSATA card to connect to my off-board eSATA hard drive, which carried my music. Sometimes I just run it off the battery, but honestly, I don't think sound changes much.
So far, it sounds very good connected to my asynchronous USB DAC.
It used to have XP, now Windows 7. I don't use it for anything else, there's no other software loaded but JRiver. Output is with USB direct to my DAC.
I've never had a problem with it, music is played from an external USB drive.
I will freely admit that I've never compared to another playback system - something like a dedicated or purpose built music server. However, the playback of LP's I've recorded or CD's that I've ripped doesn't seem to have suffered from the process.
In other words if you can buy a laptop for $200-300 and it does what you want, then maybe that's all you need.
Good time to consider an SSD for the system disk. The system will boot quicker and LMS will run faster, especially in library scanning, with its database on the SSD.
But a Pentium 4 is a prime candidate for upgrading. It's a very inefficient CPU in terms of heat (cooling noise) and energy use. It could be bettered by an inexpensive dual-core Atom or Celeron.
Yes I'm looking for a newer PC. I got this free and it never was a problem until now. Craigslist has some decent ones, they are just far away. I agree on the SS drive.
