I was thinking it was time to get going on mine and was thinking of getting a EMU0404, or their current equivalent because both you and John S. liked them.
Has your's turned on you?

I use an EMU0404 for my in-room speaker measurements. A lot of
functionality at an affordable price, but measured resolution is
limited to around 17 bits, ie, the bottom 7 LSBs of its 24-bit
output are noise.

Thanks John.
I bet that would actually work but naturally I'd rather like to have ~20 bits monotonic so I can be sloppy at capture. However that may be wishful thinking, especially since I want to don't want to spend a lot.
I appreciate the input, Rick
Those noisy ADCs are probably monotonic, as they work off of low resolution high sample rate (sigma delta) modulators. They tend to have a lot of noise, particularly at higher frequencies, and this makes their specs look bad. To the extent that the noise is independent of the music it is likely to be benign, particularly if it is 10 - 20 dB below the noise floor of the analog source. (Not necessarily true with a live microphone feed, but quite likely with playback of a tape or LP.)
You will have to listen for yourself.

Don't, but I'll sell you mine if you insist.

Thanks Fred,
But I'm trying to become more trendy and it seems as though that line's star has set...

Thanks to all for the tips and suggestions - very helpful.
I bought an E-MU 0202, not an 0404, several years ago just to see if digitising tapes and LPs was viable. In the event, though it was a poor DAC, it was slightly better as an ADC: I used it to convert several cassette tapes.
However, I recently upgraded my vinyl setup - it now sounds not too bad at all. Using it as source to compare LPs with digital copies brought home that the 0202, despite using a decent PSU, sounds pretty scrawny even as an ADC. Hence my appeal for advice . . .
The Tascam UH-7000 is a bit more than I can afford; the ADL-40 looks an interesting design but I'm taken with the HRT Linestreamer+, esp as I can get it at a discount in the UK. We shall see.
(Sadly, using a bureau for format migration is impracticable as I live out in the sticks and have too many LPs I'd like to capture.)
Dave
Thanks Dave...
Sorry I got the model wrong. I'll be very interested in seeing what you come up with.
