One more question, based on the helpful feedback I received here: I wondered about using a PC card (in my case an Express Card/54) to add a USB 3.0 connection to connect an external hard drive. According to my logic, the PC card would connect to the system bus & not the USB hub - giving me the speed of a USB 3.0 connection, without adding a second device to the USB hub. Or do I have this wrong?

You have this correct.
Your logic is sound. Your probably get a set of USB drivers with the PCcard. The quality of those drivers will be important to your satisfaction.

Yes, you can use Express Card/54 to USB, eSATA, or Firewire.
