"Thanks for taking the time to respond Bob. Might a better solution be a NAS setup accessed via Ethernet?"
A NAS is actually a good idea if you have use for one. I use Synology and two custom Freenas systems. To start out I probably would not get a NAS if you just are using it for music storage though. A NAS can do so much more, so if you think you will be taking advantage of the features... Go for it...
As far as using USB for your music, you can do what ever you like, but all the people that love to comment with nothing worthwhile to say is rather amusing.
Sounds like your notebook already has firewire, an esata card is not expensive... What's the point??? It is just common sense...
It would be better if people would actually listen before they talk. If you have a USB DAC you really do not want anything else on the USB bus... In my systems I turn everything off that is not being used on the MB. It makes a difference!

LOL What can I say... What can be better than best of show... :)

Ah, but they are too busy posting conviction computer audio 'facts'.
There may be problems if you use the same USB controller for audio and file access. Most PCs have multiple USB controllers. These can be identified in Windows 7 by using Device Manager with the connection view.
I added ESATA capability to my computer for $6.00 plus the external cable. This was necessary to get addressing capability for 4 TB drives, as my BLACK-X device was limited to 2 TB over USB 2.0. In addition, I/O performance via ESATA is much better than it was over USB. This matters to me, because my primary purpose is to do off-site backups. I have no idea how this cable or device might sound, as I do not use it for audio.
