Thanks for the advice (and, no worries, nobody is freaking out). I can certainly hook the storage drive up to a different USB hub from the DAC - & I'll give it a whirl. Apparently, the received wisdom about not running DAC & drive via USB isn't set in stone. I'll see how it sounds. At the moment, I am looking at a NAS device that can be networked & connected via USB so I have some room to reconfigure if necessary. Of course, I still have to settle on a DAC ...
Follow Ups:
I've tried USB DAC with external USB Disk, as well as USB DAC with Firewire disk. Even tried Firewire DAC and USB Disk. None of these combos caused any issues or sonic degradation, at least not on the Mac Mini. Try for yourself on your system but there is no universally accepted set-in-stone 'right way' to do it.
Also, it's very easy to see who in this forum (in this very thread, in fact) speaks from experience - and who is just trying to justify their own path of the least resistance.
During the tests in my own system, it was pretty clear that SATA HD, fed from independant PS, was less harmful to the sound quality than networked drive - even though the network was enabled in both cases. I posted about it before, can be found in archives.
There you go again...
