I use an external USB powered drive and a USB 2.0 connection to my DAC.Yes, I know, conventional wisdom has it that the output and input shouldn't both be USB or something bad will happen, something about USB processor load and not being able to handle it all. That might be true in theory, but who cares.
Try it, it will save you money and get you on your way. And then you might find it works great and you don't need to change anything.
Seriously, I'm not saying that it might not have been true at some point, but the USB/USB is a bad thing is approaching urban myth status. The multiple core processors in just about any laptop can easily handle the minimal load that sound playback presents.

Yep. Much of the "conventional wisdom" in this forum is nothing but hearsay. Someone proclaims something to be either beneficial or detrimental to sound quality, and then you see it repeated endlessly by the usual suspects. And then others repeat what they've said, and so on.
... whether it's "beneficial or detrimental".
Unfortunately, not many do, and the usual suspects prefer to just run their mouths instead, proclaiming that nothing really matters, and then that BS gets repeated by others, and so on.
No need, there is a common mode issue! Sort your ground.
This like saying that the sea is blue.
lol!"This like saying that the sea is blue."
If only this were true!

"the usual suspects prefer to just run their mouths instead, proclaiming that nothing really matters, and then that BS gets repeated by others, and so on..
Well, then how about...
the usual suspects prefer to just run their mouths instead, proclaiming that everything matters, and then that BS gets repeated by others, and so on.
Both wrong of course.
Unfortunately the second statement, while wrong in the absolute sense, does tend to be correct more often than the first. A sad testimony to the sorry system topology and design of home audio gear but also a begrudging recognition of the amazing acuteness of our hearing and aural processing.
What IS correct is that more niggling factors than one might suppose are audible either directly or via generated emotions.
Rational Rick
... it's a bit redundant, don't you think?
Regarding "sorry system topology and design of home audio gear" - I don't know whether it's true. May be you're right, and it's akin to the sorry state of the domestic lighting before the invention of electricity, but we can't know for sure, unless and until someone invents new topology and design.
"... it's a bit redundant, don't you think?"
Well... I do now that you've pointed it out. My apologies.
