I'm looking at going tablet as a new source for audio, mainly for audio streaming from vendors such as Pandora and Beats, Internet Radio and XM/Sirius.
Is anybody out there using a tablet and what would you recommend and why?
I do have DAC and I am not against the idea of possibly having to purchase a USB to AES/EBU converter to get a decent bitrate. I have broadband and wireless in my home. The only grey area for me is the actual choice of tablet.
thanks

... I don't use it in that way, and question practicality of that solution.
Tablet is something you would want at your fingertips - and being connected to DAC with USB cable kind of goes against that. Besides, I'm not sure how well it would handle a long USB cable.
Hi Carcass.
Is the USB port on the screen or on the keyboard?
I was thinking I'd opt for a wireless USB cable, so the tab could be on the couch next to me.
thanks

I'm old school, so I find it more convenient to use the tablet with keyboard dock, which pretty much makes it a small fanless laptop - but it's definitely not necessary.I tried it with my W4S uLink USB-SPDIF converter - just installed drivers, and was listening to music through the system in 5 minutes.

Cool cool. Sounds like it something I need to take a look at.
Thanks
I like the iPad. The headphone out is actually pretty good (for what it is) when using a mini/rca cable into a system. A little better is using a dock with a line out. You now bypass the volume control of the tablet but still use the internal DAC, still not so bad.
If you want to use your DAC, you will have to get a dock with a digital out that can take the digital stream and route it to your DAC which is what I do these days...
I dock the iPad on a Cambridge D100 (it's a dock only) that takes the digital stream and routes it directly to my DAC and then into my system. I find the results extremely pleasing especially when streaming at 320 kbps. This way you are bypassing the "tablet's" internal volume control AND internal DAC. The limiting factors now are the DAC of choice and, of course, what you are streaming. btw, I do this via broadband> wifi> iPad. Good luck.
Hi Onemug.
My DAC is a must. It is a highly tweaked unit - spent more time & $$ on tweaking than what it cost me originally and it suits my ear.
So my source has to be a digital out. I don't really know much other than I need to be careful re my choice of hardware to support the highest possible bit rate download.
Given I have a slightly older DAC I suspect I may need some USB to AES/ESB converter. I'll cross that bridge when I get there though.
thanks
Cleet.
Will you want the DAC direct attached to the tablet? Or will the tablet be tasked with streaming wirelessly to a remote box (like a Roku)?
I can't speak from direct experience with an Android or Windows based solution, I think they exist, but iPad can do either of the scenarios mentioned above.
Good luck
Hi Abe
Plan is to go directly to my DAC with the possible exception of a USB to AES/EBU converter.

If tablet=Android I wonder if this is going to work.
To the best of my knowledge USB audio (UAC1/2) is not part of Android at the present.
There are apps allowing you to play over the USB as they come with their own USB drivers like

A more common approach is haven a box supporting UPnP/DLNA (a PC or a streaming audio player) and use the tables as a remote (control point)

I know direct attach to DAC has been done with the USB camera connection kit on iPad. Not sure about Android or Windows tablets.
Yes - I use this to connect my iFi Nano DSD to my iPad or iPhone. Works great.
Nice. Clean and easy. No fuss. ;-)
