I've been using a dedicated Mac Mini (battery powered) as my music server for quite some time. As I'm currently using the USB input on my dac, I like having the music files on external firewire drives. I have used Amarra, JRiver for Mac and Audirvana as playback software.
A few months ago I installed Windows Server 2012 on my bootcamp partition, along with Audiophile Optimizer. Using JRiver (I've tried JPlay, but didn't here a huge difference) as the playback software, I prefer this setup compared to any of the software playback on the Mac partition. Frankly I thought there was considerable improvement just with WS Server 2012 as the OS (again with JRiver); when I added Audiophile Optimizer it was a no brainer for me as this was the best in my setup.

Yup, so far I prefer the Boot Camp Windows 8 .1/JPlay partition. Audirvana will be coming out with a new version that drops iTunes. I haven't really spent much time with the new version of Pure Music or Amarra. Things to look forward to.
Anyone who has read your posts knows you have stated a preference for Windows/Jplay. You do mention your Mac Book Pro quite a bit, so maybe that is why some are confused.
Can you elaborate on what you mentioned about Audirvana dropping iTunes? Are they now going to offer cataloging a la Jriver?

So they say.
Good. Another nail in the coffin Mac Toonz.
