I want something non-proprietary.
I don't need some narcissistic CEO of whatever company decide what I may or may not listen to. I need to get something that allows me to listen to whatever I can get on a PC.
I'm thinking worst case I just buy a laptop. I'd prefer a tab - smaller and quieter - but a laptop will do. I just need a quiet one
Cleet.
Follow Ups:
long before any CEO decides you can't stream music on their system.
And I here little or no difference between the SQ of MOG/BEATS and Spotify, but I really liked the MOG interface better, at least for search and discovery.
That said, the SONOS computer app searches the Spotify catalog better than the Spotify one does.
I used MOG and really liked it. I now use Spotify and I don't care what people say, it just sounds dead and sterile. Maybe some issue on my Roku I don't know. I'm just fed up not having an alternative.
Obsolescence of the hardware is irrelevant, as long as I run a current version of windows I can stream stuff you can only dream about on a Sonos, Roku, iTV etc. Me, I want options.
"Give me liberty, or give me death!" LOL
Cleet.
I didn't, but I just couldn't live with the BEATS interface plus I lost all of my favorites.
I'm guessing here, but is there any chance that Spotify is not streaming at its highest resolution on your ROKU? Can you access any setup parameters for Spotify on the ROKU?
Default for Spotify on my cell phone and iPad is LOW quality, you have to go into the setup menu to choose between NORMAL (low, 96kbps) HIGH (not at all high,160kbps) and EXTREME (high quality 320kbps and likely what you enjoyed with MOG)
Are you paying for the premium Spotify service, yes?
Have you tried Spotify on any computer you might have access to?
I'm a Spotify premium member and I cannot adjust or even check the bit rates. I'm assuming the issue is that the bitrate I'm getting is low. The sound quality is not good.
I can access Spotify fine from the PC downstairs. It's not set up for sound so I cannot judge the sound quality.
I finally bit the bullet and signed up for Spotify Premium tonight.
In the Spotify App on the computer, I went into Preferences and checked the box for "High Quality Streaming". I didn't see selections for Normal, High, Extreme. Are these for mobile devices and tablets only?
Since I chose "High Quality Streaming" is it streaming on my computer at 320kbps? Thanks.
BTW, I like the way they have the genres set up. I was exploring Classical Essentials earlier and now listening to 100 Greatest Punk Songs of All Times. My favorites will probably be Rock Classics and a couple the Jazz and Blues categories.
which would make sense for those paying for cellular data by the bit.
For me the interface is useless as I care only about specific classical music releases. And while Spotify have a huge catalog, finding stuff in it is not easy. MOG has a bit better search function where the chances of finding a specific CD was pretty good if you included composer then perhaps orchestra and various performers including conductor, etc.
Unfortunately, neither MOG/BEATS or Spotify allow search by record label.
Spotify and even more so BEATS Music want to act as a radio station and select the music for you, which I have NO interest in. Anything else is a pain.
Thanks! I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a checkbox somewhere in the App for the highest quality. I have yet to try Spotify on the smartphone or tablet.
I'm happy with both Spotify and Pandora but I'm really enjoying Spotify for browsing and 'music discovery' as it offers the genre and various sub categories. Since I am not very familiar with Classical I was able to bring up Classical Essentials, 50 Best Classical Piano, 99 Most Essential Chopin Masterpieces, etc.
And it sounds very nice in the background as I work at my desk.
