It would also need a DMA engine that was dedicated to the I2S port and not shared between USB and Ethernet. The I2S interface should also be a slave, so that the bit clock could come from the DAC module, avoiding the need for a PLL or ASRC in the DAC.
(The Pi may have this capability. I haven't investigated.)

there are so many folks working with these kinds of devices and some quite enthusiastic that I am trying to learn more about it. The Pi's I2S output seems like a good start as long as one can isolate it from the DAC. I have done nothing but read some accounts of other's exploits.
I am a bit of a PC partisan due to MQNPlayer but would love a new and simpler approach.

I have a Pi that is freeing up with the end of a non-audio project. So perhaps I will see if I can make it work well. I would like to use USB 2.0 to my Mytek DAC, but this seems unlikely as it requires a Rigisystems driver and could not find one for the ARM Linux platform the last time I checked.
