Yes most here are familiar with the 501.
The 301 is actually lower end, but audio circuitry seems very similar. The volume control on the 501 was only for the headphone jack, now it can control the outputs also. LEDs replace the display and no switchable filters.
Follow Ups:
Good to know about the 501 volume control ability to control RCA outs, not just the headphone jack.
Has that feature been available for a while now? From what I've read at online retailers, I thought it was only the headphone out that was variable on the 501.

I think you might have misread what I wrote. The 301 is variable, not the 501.
Ah, that's too bad about the 501. I'll be looking for a very compact setup for my office and eliminating the preamp would be a good start. Thanks.
Get a 301. Might sound the same, or better. People mention turning off the 501 display improves the sound. Not sure about how much not having filter settings will matter. I guess it depends on what settings they use. There is a programing port on the back, might be able to change settings from there. Might be killer for $500...
It's tempting but I'm also considering the ones below. Any others you might know of?
Sony HAP-S1
Marantz M-CR610
Teac AI-501DA
A streamer, no amps but the Auralic looks interesting.
Abe, I believe he was referring to the 301's Volume Control. I think the 501 remains a headphone only volume control.
