Not bad for $500...
Follow Ups:
The low cost DAC market is getting really cut throat. This thing has to compete against the new $399 Essence III by Asus. Yikes!
Do you know what the output impedance is of the Asus DAC ?

The real answer is I don't know for sure.
That isn't something I've seen as a spec from asus. However, since they list the AD827's as the output buffer I'd say it's almost certainly well under the 100ohm mark.
The 827 is spec'd at 15 ohms open loop on the output by Analog but designers usually add a bit of series R in there to keep it stable looking in to too much output capacitance. Then there is the feedback network sapping energy as well.
I'd suspect it to be right around 25-50 ohms in circuit but I'm guessing of course.
Where you can buy one?
Same place as the UD-301?
I've got my sights set on this one. If it has the same low output impedance as the UD-501 (22 Ohms) it would be an excellent substitute for a preamp!

Cool.
Wonder if/when it will be available in the USA? They have another model here, the UD-501 that a couple inmates own.
I'm not sure of the detailed differences, but the UD-301 seems more versatile than the UD-501 with analog outputs that are switchable between fixed line out and variable output, allowing the UD-301 to eliminate a preamp in systems with only digital sources.
Yes most here are familiar with the 501.
The 301 is actually lower end, but audio circuitry seems very similar. The volume control on the 501 was only for the headphone jack, now it can control the outputs also. LEDs replace the display and no switchable filters.
Good to know about the 501 volume control ability to control RCA outs, not just the headphone jack.
Has that feature been available for a while now? From what I've read at online retailers, I thought it was only the headphone out that was variable on the 501.

I think you might have misread what I wrote. The 301 is variable, not the 501.
Ah, that's too bad about the 501. I'll be looking for a very compact setup for my office and eliminating the preamp would be a good start. Thanks.
Get a 301. Might sound the same, or better. People mention turning off the 501 display improves the sound. Not sure about how much not having filter settings will matter. I guess it depends on what settings they use. There is a programing port on the back, might be able to change settings from there. Might be killer for $500...
It's tempting but I'm also considering the ones below. Any others you might know of?
Sony HAP-S1
Marantz M-CR610
Teac AI-501DA
A streamer, no amps but the Auralic looks interesting.
Abe, I believe he was referring to the 301's Volume Control. I think the 501 remains a headphone only volume control.
