I plugged this little guy in and used a pair of Sennheiser HD 600 Headphones. The sound was pretty impressive considering that it is only $250.00. It handled 88.2/24 and 96/24 with no issues. The sound is detailed without hardness. It is very easy to listen to. Naturally, I won't be selling my Crimson HS anytime soon.The next experiment will be to play it through my system once I purchase the mini adapter.
Congratulations to both Gordon and Audioquest for this excellent USB DAC.

Why 64-steps?
How many different steps can golden ears hear?
Is this because the human ear does not respond equally to all frequencies?
Does it have something to do with logarithmic or arithmetic?

Does it work on the iPad via Camera Connection Kit? (or CCK with USB Hub in between?)

Still formulating my system, but I may need a 15-20 foot run of cable from my computer to the integrated amp of my main system. Would this be okay with the DragonFly, or not so good? Also, what type of cable and connection would be needed, if it works at all. THANKS.
-Bob
I will be connecting a 3 meter run of Audioquest cable as soon as the mini adapter comes. I'm looking forward to playing with this on my Stax Omega 2 phones/ Tube amp and the main system. More comments to follow when I get the adapter.

It has a very low output impedance should not have any problems driving a
run of 15'. Its output is on a 3.5mm stereo jack so you will need an
adapter.
Our review of the AudioQuest Dragonfly will be featured in the October
issue of Stereophile.

Sounds like a conventional 3.5mm-to-RCA left and right plugs would do the trick. Thank you.
-Bob
Should you always extend the analog side using long cable runs with the DragonFly?

Merc,
That ESS chip with a good USB connection is pretty nice. :)
I am listening DIY one battery powered driven by a HiFace. Pretty amazing actually.
John Kenny does a DAC with that chip. He also has another DAC with the similar (DAC-OpAmp) Burr Brown chip which has also been reported to be excellent sounding...

Bob
Bob,
The ESS module for my Crimson DAC is also battery powered.
"The ESS module for my Crimson DAC is also battery powered."
Yes the mad scientist Gordon does great stuff!!!
Now if he could only design an asynchronous nuclear powered vibrator, we would be talking Bill Gates money!!! :)
The main thing should be a result of the 24-bit depth if you did not have it before. It looks to me like they are going to special care to control the volume after the 24-bits have been converted to analog so that no bits, audible or not, are degraded by a volume control acting on the digital stream. Digital volume controls lose more and more resolution as the level is reduced, so Dragonfly's analog volume control will preserve your bits and maintain the audible purity of the music.

Observe, don't think
The Dragonfly's digitally controlled analog volume, like that found on the Wavelength Proton, will not degrade the sound when reduced, like it does on the $500.00 Halide Dac and other USB 24-bit/96kHz Resolution designs.

I review the Halide DAC HD in the August issue of Stereophile. It does not
have a volume control. What am I missing?

John,
I think what he is saying is that to use a volume control with the Halide you would have to use the application control, which of course will limit the data going to the dac.
~~~~~ Yea I know stupid is as stupid does!
Look guys you cannot compare apple's to oranges. Everyone is going to have different tastes and needs. Go out and freaken listen and make your own decision. That's why we pay the dealers!
Thanks
Comparing audio equipment is not always an option for non-city people. I found one authorized dealer who no longer carries the Halide HD they say, “for the money there are better options around.” Now they actively promote the Dragonfly on the front page of their Website. Except for the inevitable junction losses, and top-notch cables, is there anything the Halide HD does better than the Dragonfly?
Indeed. But who would do that? Analog volume control after the DAC is
the logical system architecture. Unless you want to drive headphones
directly from the DAC output, in which case the Dragonfly will be a more
appropriate choice than the Halide, having an output stage that was
designed to drive headphones.
John Atkinson> Indeed. But who would do that?
John we have 75 million baby boomers reaching retirement. We can already get The Rolling Stones at 176 kHz, Neil Young at 192 kHz. We can pay for better sound when using our computers. None know anything about Dac’s. Why should we?
I am not talking about headphones. Music will be stored and streamed from the cloud. Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, Youtube, WebPages, Phone calls, all go through Dac’s as well as audio players. The Gordonfly offers the additional flexibility to change the volume without degrading the source from the computer, as well as from the pre-amp for the few who continue to use them. The Halide HD, a similar product with similar technology does not.
You're divulging proprietary, 'need to know' type information.
...so far.
...you should know he think it's an unique signature or something.
