These speakers just went on sale for 50 or 55 bucks.

I'd like to know what anyone knows about them.
What I'm after is clarity in sound and good balance. I'm not a bass nazi, though I do hate the ringy sound that you get without any. I also have a sub sitting around that I could hook up if I really had to, though I have found that subs don't make a noticable difference at low volume, and medium volume is as high as I will ever be playing them.
In essence, I the quality of Bose or so is plenty good enough for me, without the ridiculous price.
All opinions appreciated.

Based on the 10% '1 star' reviews, I'd skip 'em. Build quality would seem sub standard at any price while returning dead ones would start racking up shipping.
Save up and go upline a little. Even the bottom of the line Ensignia speakers at Best will 'best' these. Of course, with the Best, you'll need to also get the 150$ receiver, to match.
For even LESS $$, these Pioneers will get you 150% of the Bose sound for 15% of the $$$$$
Too much is never enough
If you don't mind missing the sound of several instruments in a typical orchestra, these may work for you. 500 Hz is essentially no bass at all, but for the price, you get what you pay for. No way to really know if they work for you without trying them though. At that cost, there's not much to lose. Try to get something with bass down to 80hz or lower and you'll be much happier. If you can go somewhere and hear them first, try to do that, particularly if it's a place where you can bring them back if you don't like them in your set-up, like Fry's or Circuit city.
I use a pair of Acoustic energy AEGO desktop speakers that come with an under-desk subwoofer that also serves as an amplifier to the two very small desktop speakers. You can still buy them from British websites, but I'm not sure if there is a US dealer. More money, but they are spectacularly good, and take up very little space. Same idea as the Bose Lifestyle mini-speakers, but the AEGOs are far better than anything Bose makes, for way less money. I've had them for several years and they still blow my mind every time I fire them up.
There is a richness in fine music reproduction that is hard to understand until you've heard it, and I don't think anyone on this site would encourage you to settle for Bose quality. It's about connection with the musician's heart and soul that cannot be provided by super-budget equipment. There are many options at a bit higher prices that will be much more revealing, and trying them out at a store is the only way to tell what speakers resonate especially well for you.
Good luck.
I'm confused how you even knew that the bass was at 500Hz?
My mistake; the specs say they go down to 20Hz but with a 4" woofer I find that hard to believe. I agree with pictureguy though. At that price, for self powered speakers,it's hard to imagine quality and reliability. Hey, maybe they are the screaming buy of the century! What the heck, buy two pairs in case one or both crap out. Or five and do ampless surround sound.
