Damn this place is amazing.
Follow Ups:
You, my friend, need to take your photography to the next level. The desire is there in you, it's for all to see. I've helped others to reach out to find their potential. So don't be offended, but your style borders on the banal as is. These lastest series are boring and bland. The lighting just doesn't evoke intense emotion.Right now they serve merely as a record shot. Something any passerby could take for his vacation and end up in some old shoe box. Sure the crowd here is easy to please! As someone just intimated- inner city life, yuk.
I took the liberty to PS your pic- just to show how it might other wise look if you shot 45 minutes earlier in "Golden Light". You need to experiment more with how light will affect & enhance your images. In any case I had fun with this pic of yours. Take it or leave it!
Check this guy's site, if his many pics fails to move the viewer, then "Exlax "won't either.

What is left is this metallic phony looking photo. I have seen your work Joe, and it is fab, but this touch up is horrible in my opinion.

If you look at John's pictures, there is a realism there. It looks just the way I would see it if I was passing by. How do I know? I passed by areas like that many, many, years ago. With John's photos, it's easy to sink into the feeling of witnessing the scene.
Your advice is fine. But it's more like an "effect" picture. And same with the guy's website pictures. I cannot as easily float into the picture. There is less realism.
You know I appreciate it. Not often one can get pro advice free.I've played around big time in PS but I always keep coming back to the reality shots. My preference is to get what I see.
In this particual instance I did catch the golden moment. The rising sun (maybe 6:10) lit up this one area red, orange, gold in contrast to it's natural color which is kind of bland tan unless it's wet.
Keep the advice coming.....as you know I do this for me with no desire to do a gallery or make money but I love to share. Some things light me up like a cheap Christmas tree but I view photography chat, even criticism, as learning and sharing.
but to get there earlier like 5:30 am to get the kind of light effect I only hinted at with my re-creation. So you don't have what we call bald skies- uninteresting whitish looking. With film we would often use Filters. Enhancing reds, oranges, violet, warming ones in yellows. with or without polorizers or neutral densities.Anyway go over Chris's site there is a whole litany of great stuff.

The 20D has built in filters and I've got the real deals as well.I think an Orange filter might be fun to play with.
The colors I hit in that picture you commented on only lasted like that for 5 minutes, maybe less.
Man, I'd give anything if you could come out here on a shoot with me.
I'm trying to get in there as much as possible. Soon it'll be WAY too HOT to walk around in there without tons of water and I'm moving at the end of the year.
Maybe when I get to Okinawa I'll try to get all my best Joshua Tree shots together and make myself a portfolio.
I know where the gators are small.I hope you are using a Tripod and shooting at like 1/2 sec or longer 1 sec, with a good lenshade?
