Geo. Washington, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, and Ronald Reagan. These were the greatist and most effective presidents. They don't make them like this anymore.

.....is at the Reagan place trying on Ronnie's clothes!Expect to see long tributes to RR at the GOP convention this summer, with Bush feebly trying to cast himself as the new Reagan.
Too bad about Reagan's death, and commenting on his politics at this point would be a mite unseemly.
GWB will try to get as much mileage out of this as possible, and soon.

I expect Rove is already hard at work, figuring the angles. Something tells me the Pres is going to deliver a stirring eulogy, during which he "recalls' his many wonderful philosophical conversations with Reagan.

but, I think we can all agree that he was a sincere man with unwavering beliefs. More's the pity that he suffered from Alzheimer's these past ten years, and was unable to give the benefit of his life's experience to his successors. Thankfully, though, his suffering is at an end.

I'm terribly sorry to see the Gipper go. Whether you agreed with him or not (and mostly, I didn't - economically Reaganomics was a disaster) you cannot deny his decency, simple sincerity and strength. He had a strong spirit the world is lessened without.
He was the last of the real conservative Presidents. Bush Sr. was merely a watered down Reagan without the presence or the authority. Junior Bush has no ideological relation to Reagan, and now that Reagan is gone, I hope Americans don't forget what a real conservative is - but I'm sure they will.
Some people here are taking shots at Reagan. That's sick and pathetic. Now is not the time for that, Reagan will be debated from now into eternity. Nobody makes any point by acting in a classless, insensitive manner.
As to those who are now trying to capitalize on Reagan's death to advance their peculiar neo-con views - the Gipper was a humble, self-effacing man who would have never taken such a sleazy manner, his death is no time to be political.
Just respect the spirit of this President and respect his family, a classy thing to do would be to head to his foundation website and sign the condolences book already up and extend your wishes to his family, who have shown true courage standing with him through his long illness.

How about the money going illegally to the Contras? In Washington a Lieutnant Colonel cannot do those things, so no LC ran this operation without higher ups.

and walk away from the ones that don't count. As I said, I frequently disagreed with Reagan's polices. I'm no fan pof Reaganomics, I know full well about Iran-Contra, and if Gorbachev didn't begin Perestroika the Cold War would probably still be going today. Great.
But that's history and now it's for historians to debate.
For today, we should remember Ronald Reagan as a person, not just a politician, and for that I remember him as a decent person, sincere, a man who always had a smiling, comforting demeanour - a far cry from the smirking, strutting person we see today.
We may debate what happened during his presidency, and I note a few people accusing him of killing central americans and such. That's for history to decide. I do believe that what Reagan did he did honestly - out of honest belief that he was acting correctly, and without deceptive motives in his heart. It's important for conservatives to remember that example - today, the actions are not founded in honest belief, and the heart taking them is a dark one.
There's a time and place to debate a president's legacy, and the day of his death just isn't either one. Fight the fight when it matters - like with the guy in the office now - and have the class to pass on the slagging while he's still not even cold in the ground. Whatever you think, Reagan was a man who served his country and that deserves our respect.

He was DIRECTLY responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans. Mourn them, if you are in a somber mood.

There is a huge number of people here in Britain who have the greatest respect for, and wgo were extremely fond of, Ronald Reagan.Javajive's posts on this subject, and those of a number of his contemporaries, do indeed reveal the characters of those posters, as another poster here has already stated.
Javajive and those others who have not been able to prevent themselves from making extremely nasty and inopportune comment upon Reagan's death are, so to say, pieces of shit; their comments, whilst not unexpected, are typical of the simple nastiness that makes them what they are.
There is an element of gloating, and a deliberate ignorance of just what Reagan did for the United States.
Were those who are at all to the right of Lenin, (those same people that Javajive, and a number of others, would classify as neocons, fascists and etcetera), to have made similar gloating remarks concerning the demise of some liberal or left personage, the javajives of this board would be incandescent, screaming about the insensitivity of the Right.
Reagan was loved by a large number of people. That will not change, despite the howling of the unpleasant left.
Very slick operator. Began dismantling unions and Social Security, Education, Health Reforms, the Environment, etal. The Star Wars initiative, anyone remember that? Iran Contra-arms for hostages, anyone remember that?He was the guy took away our interest deduction on our credit card debt. Anyone remember that one? That is to say, he increased taxes on the workers and decreased taxes for the rich. Put our govt. into huge deficits to pay for his military spending.
as long as the war crimiinal is a conservative then he/she really isn`t a war criminal, eh David?

Not ONE major news report on tv giving anything resembling a bio---these are all eulogies!
The huge deficit, the Marine Beirut barracks unanswered slaughter, Irancontra...all unmentioned in the tawdry, overblown rhetoric.
Straw man: Americans all felt terribly insecure after Vietnam, high interest rates, skyhigh gasoline prices, and the Iranian hostage crisis. Ronny to the rescue!
Fact: we were by far still the ascendant world power in 1980. From what everyone here should know of the Arab mind and behavior---do you really think they freed the hostages out of fear? The only logical explanation is Ronny acted traitorously in making an illegal arms deal with the Iranians---or have you forgotten what Irancontra was all about just a few years later?
I hope you are drinking a good bottle of something, tonight, if you are still swallowing the "good Ronny" baloney.

good riddance! Now to get the present one out of office. Is the American electorate savvy enough to do it, or have they been duped again, as we were before in the 80s? Stay tuned--film at 11.

It was just 2 days before the election, and the energy and enthusiasm from the huge crowd was indescribable. To me, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" is the single greatest utterance by an American president in the latter half of the 20th century.RIP, Mr. President.
Pad,I was 10 when Reagan was shot and taken to my future alma matar for his operation.
I became fascinated with current events on that day and I loved Reagan as a teenager growing up in Canada. He made me get involved in politics and encouraged me to study international relations.
Reagan was the most significant president since FDR and contrary to the revolting crap behing posted above, he'll be remembered as a great man by most people across the planet.

The greatest leader during my lifetime, and that will likely still be the case at the end of my lifetime..."As disappointed as I may be in some who served me, I'm still the one who must answer to the American people for this behavior. And as personally distasteful as I find secret bank accounts and diverted funds—well, as the Navy would say, this happened on my watch." -Ronald Reagan, in a speech to the nation regarding the Iran-Contra scandal.
Very fitting indeed! Heard clips of him giving his D-Day speech in France 20 years ago - fantastic.
