along with other fictions. Sure, it's working out great, say - who started it? Wasn't it Reagan? Great progress, very impressive - as much as the success is bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice, to finding Mullah Omar, to finding the anthrax killer, to reviving the economy...like I said, impressive. Oh well. On to Iraq.

BTW - someone called the new Solaris a Giant Turd... I saw the promo on TV and it sure looks that way instantly.

If the new & improved Solaris isn't available for preview yet, that opinion, based on a promo is a little premature, don't you think? At least I attempted to sit through the original Russian version film in it's entirity before reaching a similar conclusion! Of course, the earlier film is probably a coprolite by now. ;^)
I looked at that review, and when reading it carefully it was clear the insightful writer was referring to the Tarkovsky's film.So you "attempted to sit through" it... that is OK. Last night I saw the WHOLE ad on TV.
One doesn't need more than a second of seeing Clooney to puke.

another chance. I saw it in the sixties several times (I was involved in the film club at my university) and loved it every one, but, that being the late sixties/early seventies, I was fueled as one might expect Hunter T to have been. Years later, I attempted to revisit it and I was amazed at how slooooow Tarkovsky moves his tale along. Perhaps the secret is to get yourself smashed on your favorite substance for the performance?

Ok, so read a bit further in my post and you'll see a mention of early seventies, as well. You obviously weren't there, since you remember it so well.

But of course, they must've been rigged. I watched the evening launch of one of the Minutemen targets (from Vandenberg AFB) from my driveway...what a fantastic display when it reached the sunlight many miles up.

was dumbed down so much that there was no way to fail.
Something like feeding the intercepter prior info on the position of the target instead of letting the interceptor find it with its own sensors.
Before they took that step, only failures.
OK, so you have no clue about how technical things work... then let those who do judge.

I thought we had missiles which can strike pre-determined stationary targets for decades.
Conducting an intercept at the closing velocities of the ICBM and the high speed interceptor is a new level of performance. That kind of progress doesn't happen just by itself. This is not like striking Saddam's bunker with a cruise missile.
Next test is going to represent another increase in complexity.
This is normal development process taking place.

> > Conducting an intercept at the closing velocities of the ICBM and the high speed interceptor is a new level of performance. That kind of progress doesn't happen just by itself.
because the world has changed: a box cutter interceptor would make more sense. Besides, launches from submarines (China, I would guess is the next real heavyweight challenger) would be quite un-preventable by an iteration of Star Wars now envisioined.
Multiple warheads would also defeat Star Wars, as you well know, unless we're talking another twenty years of "development." By then, as with the Maginot Line, the target will have moved on. But, hey, it is a wonderful employment opportunity!

by their own time standards, money standards, or performance standards. The only thing that changed was the definition of a success.
They can't even get close to sorting out decoys or chaff.Murf

A project only an old rocket scientist could love...(good content, Vic (as ussual!). Love those petty insults!).
If you read the time you spent yawning you would be in position to argue now.Think about it NOW, like RIGHT NOW, before your next yawn hits ya!
Better yet, switch to the area where you have some knowledge. Talking politics about issues that are technical is silly.

I'm getting lessons on yawning!Too bad he copped out on the real subject (as ussual!).
As I stated before to another ill-informed individual here, you should attack the SDI on its political merits. There you would have ground for discussion. You instead decided to attack it where it is inpenetrable - on its technical terms. First - you have no knowledge in that area, as your post indicate so clearly.
Second - its development is progressing nicely, its speed being governed not by the technical difficulties but by the political discussions.
Stating something can't be done purely on technical merits is naive, as it is simply the matter of time.So take my advice and switch your tactics.

your advice, that is."You instead decided to attack it where it is inpenetrable - on its technical terms. First - you have no knowledge in that area, as your post indicate so clearly."
The ray gun is a technical reality too. Why don't we build one?
Fact is, given enough time & $$$, almost everything imaginable can be a technical reality.
Fact again, the system has failed most every test, to the degree that the military have dumbed down the tests, and there is some kind of gag order on the military on discussions of this failure-driven dumbing down.
Next fact, I'm the one giving info here (and shipguy who was right about the two tests), while you just do what you're best at, throwing petty insults and hiding behind macho-stupid bluster.Vic, ever been on a nuclear missle sub? ;-)
Murf
***The ray gun is a technical reality too. Why don't we build one?Sorry, Murf, are you really that ill-informed? We are building not just one but many, tested one recently, there was a thread about it.
The Israelis already have one operational and more will be coming.
Everyone is working on direct energy weapons, not just for the SDI for for all sorts of use, and it IS the way of the future.
***Fact again, the system has failed most every test, to the degree that the military have dumbed down the tests, and there is some kind of gag order on the military on discussions of this failure-driven dumbing down.
There is no gag order if you care to read sources... not yawn. Most of the test were successful.
Each test gets incredibly scrutiny by several organization.
Just start reading, Murf, it is all there.

"Fortunately for us, there is no such force yet. In fact the reality today is that it is easier to build a missile that can't be shot down, then the defense."In short, I rest my case.

Of course the gag order wasn't released to the Daily News, but it is there.
I would also dispute your "successful test" assertion. So now they can feed coordinates into a missle and say "go there"? The sensors suck and the software sucks. God knows what those great successes were.
And the tests are scrutinized so that the military don't lie to us more, and suck more money into the black hole.Murf
I guess you have all forgotten the infamous early tests wherein the "successful" results were found to have been doctored?
![]()
Good thing, you finally read some, so now let's see if you learned something too.
"Fortunately for us, there is no such force yet. In fact the reality today is that it is easier to build a missile that can't be shot down, then the defense."
***In short, I rest my case. And you rest yoru case exactly why? This has been true in the military affairs since day one, since the heary man called Ahu hurled a stone at his former friend Nahi who has just molested his girlfriend Aza.
This fact has never stopped us from making progress, it is not going to stop now.
Ah, I get it! You are one of those "theoreticians" who maintain that only perfect defense has right to exist.
"The Israelis already have one operational and more will be coming.

Well, Murf, I guess you still have nor read enough yet. Those weapons are here already in many forms. So your assertion about the Ray Gun being not feasible is just a horseshit. Simply admit it.
"There is no gag order if you care to read sources... not yawn. Most of the test were successful.

Well, I kinda agree it is "there" for those too lazy to read. Self-imposed one.
***I would also dispute your "successful test" assertion. So now they can feed coordinates into a missle and say "go there"? The sensors suck and the software sucks. God knows what those great successes were.Always boring to talk to someone who knows zilch about the subject. Why don't you spend some time reading about the rockets and missiles, then perhaps you will tell us what was done and what sucked.
For your instant benefit, telling the missile to "go there" and have it "be there" EXACTLY on time to meet something traveling at Mach X is a great achievement.
***And the tests are scrutinized so that the military don't lie to us more, and suck more money into the black hole.
So the military is damned when it is secretive, and it is still damned when it is open.
This is plain silly.

Oh good!! I guess now the Isrealis can ditch those Patriot missles (and the succesor they have), because those missles suck (and the military lied to us about how much they sucked). How is the ray gun testing going? I would think the Isrealis, like us, would publicize any successes?
**********

And this is exactly what the interceptor can't do (and it would hardly matter if it could) without unussual (& improbable) help. Let alone chaff. This is what they had to rig the last couple of tests to DO. This after rwo decades of big spending?

How is the ray gun testing going?Murf, I keep telling you - read some before making yourself look bad. You are spreading first-grade fallacies. Modified and upgraded for missile defence Patriots are part of the Israel's missile defense system. It further consists of the Arrow missile battery (two more to be deployed soon to provide full coverage of small country) and Tactical Laser.
Mind reading all this yourself, so I would not have to keep repeating it?
If "your" military lied to you - how did you find they sucked?
Laser weapons tests are going great - why don't you shed your lazyness and read about them?
***I would think the Isrealis, like us, would publicize any successes?
You would "think"? How much "thinking" is required for someone to find articles and read them? Stories about the Arrow and the rest have been around any place you go.

As I stated, the SDI progress has not been governed by the technical issues, but by the approvals and appropriations.
When you call the tests rigged you display your ignorance about how technical development works. ALL prototypes have simplifications... but why I am telling you this - you don't give a shit abotu truth anyway.
