As Dubya's administration continues to add to its all-time budget deficit, the cost of the war in Iraq soars to Vietnam-like territory.
Follow Ups:
Even with all the strategic planning, mistakes happen and it can be costly. Its collateral to a war. Its expected. And, $40M is but a drop in the bucket anyway. What is the mortgage bailout going to cost?
What did it cost to invade Peleliu Island during WW2? Many people think it was a waste of time and completly off the track of stratetic thinking. An island that was valueless. But, at the time of planning it looked like it may hold value. So, we took the risk and accepted the collateral fallout.
Now tell me which would you rather see us do with out money: Piss it away in the sands of the Middle East, or spend it here to improve the lives of all Americans?
...what it is that would improve their lives. For the most part that would be projects closer to home. IMO, the federal government should get the smallest chunk of the pie and have the least amount of influence on the people of this country.
can't anyone improve their own life?
And we deserve occasional bone, or two...?

...aren't important to America? Or do we just say "fuck you" to the Average Joe?
Very important to the common American.

The congress, under control of the Democrats, so far has passed an 300 BILLION Farm Bill, a 300 BILLION mortgage bailout bill, tried to pass a 50 BILLION low income assistance bill, and wants to pass another 150 BILLION stimulus package.
Then, if we listen to Obama, he wants to add, in addition, add a TRILLION in new spending, and his tax proposals will actually decrease the amount of Federal revenue by killing the economy, which is already suffering.
40 Million is like lunch money compared to that.

What's the matter with you? You'd rather piss money away in a worthless rathole like Iraq? And you talk about lefties who hate America? You got your priorities bass ackwards pal.
Which then would have an extra couple of billion a day in oil revenues to give the Hezbos and hamas, and to fund terror attacks against the West.
Wake up and go back to sleep.

Wasn't before Bush took us in.
As the guy who jumped off the 20-story building shouted as he passed the 10th Floor "So far..so good!"
Lets talk after the US pulls out its troops because as soon as we do, the real situation is going to shake itself out. We can stay there a week, a year, or 100 years and that still won't change a thousand years of history.
but, maybe the cost of this war is not all that much - which could very well be why the democrats/Obama are proposing so much more spending.
Yea, we can wait until it all shakes out and look back with hindsight but, we are not there yet so, we do our thinking and take the necessary risks.
The fact is, no one knows just where terrorism would be today had we night launched a fight against it. You can say Iraq was the wrong place but, I don't think you can sustain this argument without making some assumptions - which will degrade the "measurement uncertainty", so to speak. As it stands, America carries on without narry a worry about terrorism on our soil. In other words, the end seems to justify the means.
But back to your point, will that culture change due to this war? I really don't know. Maybe it will, maybe it won't.

History ALWAYS changes.
