I drive my 16 ohm loudspeakers at home directly with my preamp.
They are about 98 db 1watt/1 meter. The system will play to a conversational level. Seems to sound fine :)

Right- although I have- the amps engulfed the space between the speakers...
I wonder whether my MP1 would direct drive my modified Sound Labs, which as you know exhibit > 20 ohms impedance across most of the audio spectrum and are much much more efficient than ever before with the old SL crossover network. My amps are loafing driving the Sound Labs, these days. Probably not worth trying but fun to think about.
If you have 4 power transformers on the circuit board of your power supply then you can expect to hear something.
my MP1 had four power tranformers for the circlotron when I bought it; it is circa early 1990s production. Then I converted to the 2-transformer PS when that was in fashion. I am more than ready to convert back to 4 transformers, but I need the four transformers.
You might want to think about a new power supply board too...
