The MP-1 can drive 32 ohm headphones; it can deal with several ICE amps in parallel like walking in the park.
Follow Ups:
Based on Kevin Covi's (and John Broskie's) formula, Zo = rp/mu+2, where rp is defined as the parallel sum of the plate resistances per phase, I calculated the output impedance of my MP1 at about ~170 ohms, give or take. That's plenty low for a tube preamp, low enough to drive any solid state amplifier, and I guess that the low power requirement of 32-ohm headphones makes it possible for the preamp to drive such, even though the impedance match would not be ideal.
I drive my 16 ohm loudspeakers at home directly with my preamp.
They are about 98 db 1watt/1 meter. The system will play to a conversational level. Seems to sound fine :)
You don't use MA-3's on these........
ET : )
Right- although I have- the amps engulfed the space between the speakers...
I wonder whether my MP1 would direct drive my modified Sound Labs, which as you know exhibit > 20 ohms impedance across most of the audio spectrum and are much much more efficient than ever before with the old SL crossover network. My amps are loafing driving the Sound Labs, these days. Probably not worth trying but fun to think about.
If you have 4 power transformers on the circuit board of your power supply then you can expect to hear something.
my MP1 had four power tranformers for the circlotron when I bought it; it is circa early 1990s production. Then I converted to the 2-transformer PS when that was in fashion. I am more than ready to convert back to 4 transformers, but I need the four transformers.
You might want to think about a new power supply board too...
