Can an MP-1 work well with 5692 instead of 6SN7? My friend who owns an MP-1 with uses 10x 5692 tubes.
I would not use the 5692 in the regulator position. 5692 is rated at 250v and will not have as much bearing on sound. I prefer a good 6sn7gtb, slow turn on and 450v rating. For the regulator use a Sylvania, Tung Sol or Raytheon.

That's why I specifically stated that the 5692 is a 6SN7GT equivalent (not a GTA or GTB). It's safest to play it that way, but I have seen it written that the 5692 actually can handle the higher plate voltages of a GTA/B. The extended estimated life span of the 5692 will however not be realized at the higher voltages (significantly above 250V). Anyway, I was not aware that late model MP1s use a 6SN7 for voltage regulation. Is that true? (Mine is an early 90s version that I updated to approximately MkII specs, but I use Vacuum State SuperRegulators for the HV regulation.)
My MP1 is a MkIII and it uses a 6sn7 for both line and phono as a regulator, 10 total 6sn7's in my unit plus 6 12at7. I am currently using a Sylvania 6sn7WGT brown base as the line gain tube and GTB's for all the rest. Had TS round plates but they were microphonic and a tad noisy, they now are first gain tube in MA1, magical there.

In my linestage and circlotron output stage, I favor the Kenrad 6SN7GT or VT231, but I am running out of good ones, due to the fact that I inadvertently left my preamp running for more than two months, 24/7, while my system was otherwise out of commission due to amplifier mods described below. One of the KenRads went microphonic during that time. I never tried the W's due to high cost. Got a bunch of 5692s, including RCA red-base and GE. Got a few Raytheons; some are good sounding, some not. I will probably have to buy some more KenRads, somewhere.
My bad as Ralph says below ccs. I found the Ken Rads to be noisy and micrphonic, nice tube in amps. Tried W's but I felt they are a bit bright for Atma Sphere. I have and may try the VT231, nice tubes, problem is finding quiet non microphonic ones due to their place in the gain stage.

In my experience, the sonics are more brand-dependent than they are numerical designation dependent. In other words, a KenRad VT231 will sound pretty much like a KenRad 6SN7GT. And an RCA 5692 red base will sound like an RCA 6SN7GT, whereas all KenRads tend to sound different from all RCAs. This one linestage tube in my preamp is the first microphonic KenRad I've had, and it happened after several years of service. So my experience of KenRads is different from yours.
The MP-1 MkIII uses 6SN7s for Constant Current Sources, but not for voltage regulators. You can use a GT in any position- the highest voltage that any 6SN7 sees inside the preamp is about 150 volts.
That makes more sense, based on what I know and what I saw in some recent photos of the innards of a MkIII.
5692 is the milspec equivalent of a 6SN7GT, so of course it will work in the MP1, wherever 6SN7s are used. I'd like to know how you like the sound and what brand of 5692 you will be using. If you can report back, I'd appreciate it. I used to use the RCA red-base 5692 in an earlier preamp. These are premium tubes, but I found I liked other 6SN7s better just in terms of tonal balance, etc.
OK Lew I will let you know when we sit down in the next week or so to listen carefully.
We will be comparing 5692 vs. 6SN7GT Shuguang (Brown Base). The equipment lineup will be:
MP-1
M60MK3
Blue Note Stibbert CD
Eben X3 Speakers
Oracle Turntable
Tnx,
Rich
Hi Rich,
I am curious about your prick up one's ears (or to) listening comparatif/music discovery ....
Make a long test (in low & high level)....also in the low-end audio....
Allez, salukes.
Karel
Hey Karel:
We will endeavour to seek true enlightment here!
Without a true 5 way all Horn system, I may have to meditate much longer :)
Saludos from the Sunny and Rainy Caribbean,
