Heard Segovia unamplified in Orchestra Hall, Chicago
The audience (all 2200) was the quietest I have ever heard a large group of people
Also heard an unamplified classical guitar concerto at the Tobin Center in San Antonio (1700 people) and no problem in hearing the guitar so it is possible but like you I would prefer a smaller hall because of the intimate connection with the artist. I once many years ago saw flamenco guitarist Juan Serrano in a small room with 25 people sitting on folding chairs. Unforgettable

I hope this quote I read of Segovia's is true:
"If you want your audience to hear you really well, play softly."
