I had a surprise opportunity to hear classical guitarist Andrew York do a two hour show tonight in a small church venue with about 100-120 attendees here in Flagstaff. The guy is world class and tonight performed Bach's 3rd Cello Concerto along with several absolutely beautiful compositions of his own. A stunning night with a man and his guitar. If you like classical guitar, he has a lot of really beautiful stuff on Youtube playing some amazing historical guitars. Highly recommended.

. . . of what you'd want at an un-amplified acoustic guitar recital. Glad you had a great time!
Thanks! This is a small church with 10 rows of pews each left, center and right. I sat left-center 3rd row about 20 feet from York and his guitar provided an amazingly full, rich sound that filled the space. The sound that came out of his small guitar was incredible.
Heard Segovia unamplified in Orchestra Hall, Chicago
The audience (all 2200) was the quietest I have ever heard a large group of people
Also heard an unamplified classical guitar concerto at the Tobin Center in San Antonio (1700 people) and no problem in hearing the guitar so it is possible but like you I would prefer a smaller hall because of the intimate connection with the artist. I once many years ago saw flamenco guitarist Juan Serrano in a small room with 25 people sitting on folding chairs. Unforgettable

I hope this quote I read of Segovia's is true:
"If you want your audience to hear you really well, play softly."
