I have not heard ANY of the albums listed in the Times' article! (And I'm actually more worried about not having heard the Liszt TE's with Trifonov, as well as another TE recording from 2016 by Gerstein.)
Of course, just as in years past, I'll be posting my own "best of 2016" list, but I want to give it another week or week and a half before doing so.
Follow Ups:
I have no strong feelings about the NY Times critics' list either way, except that they do a nice job, intentionally, no doubt, of balancing familiar music played by major stars and new music played by perhaps slightly lesser known performers.
I've had Perahia's English Suites on my iPod for many years. I never knew he hadn't recorded the French Suites. And Alexandre Tharaud has long been a favorite of mine in modern music, it might be interesting to hear him in the Rach 2nd.
I'm not familiar with the Satie work and would like to hear it, likewise the Ades, Norgard and Abrahamsen string quartets.
Your list may be different, but these are pretty arbitrary lists anyway.
. . . than most of the Times critics do. That said, I don't mean to suggest at all that their lists are lacking in any way - how could I, since I haven't even heard any of the recordings? ;-)
Well, except for HIP, Eurotrash, etc. - which I sometimes judge a priori, based on previous experience! ;-)
BTW, I expect my list to be really small this year - I've had a lot of family stuff happen, so. . . not as much time as usual for listening.
Obviously, there's nuthin' special about the NY Times critics' choices, and never has been. Or any critics' choices, for that matter. I used to pay attention to Gramophone for such things, but not for many years.
And equally obviously, your choices are as legit as any. But careful with lazy shorthand like "HIP" or "Eurotrash". I expect high quality criticism from you, when you have the time. ;-)
Good luck with your personal issues, I have a few of those myself.
Well, IMHO the Trifonov and Gerstein Liszt discs are exceptional with Trifonov's being overwhelmingly amazing.
I just received my copy of Trifonov Liszt TE's on DG, His entire performance was available on Utube in HD quality, I hope that it is still available, it is worth watching this amazing performance.
