And I don't dismiss them as entirely unintelligent. There's hope for them, but there just doesn't seem to be a way of getting through to them, with all their jingoistic defenses. You're right - it is depressing in a way.
I think it was Schopenhauer who observed that there seems to be something in human nature whereby, even having been shown through rational observation and argument that certain beliefs we have are simply wrong, we still continue to cling to these notions anyway through our natural, human intransigence. Sometimes, this can be an advantage, because what appeared to be rational turns out not to be so upon closer or more extended examination - so our refusal to budge can sometimes (not too often!) lead us to a better (i.e., truer) understanding of certain things.
