I had an experience where it was the other way around.
I'm a jazz double bass player (classically trained) and when Stan Getz came to Ronnie Scotts in the 70s some musicians in our band invited the sideman over for an afternoon jam, amongst whom was drummer Billie Hart.
We played some tunes, and I had a kind of larger than life experience - I was in the zone, could do no wrong, was playing as well as I's ever played in my life..... you get the picture. Anyway, it was magic and I realised it was all through playing with Billy Hart. He made me feel that whatever I did was exactly right. I've never forgotten this experience.
Well, that evening we all went in to Ronnies to hear the band and when we arrived Billy and the rest of the band minus Stan were in the lobby joking about. The band were goading him...
"Hey Billy - you've played with Herbie and Miles and all those guys. So what you got that's so special?"
Billy replied laconically:
"I don't know guys...... they just tell me I feel good"
In that moment I knew exactly what he meant, and how significant it was.
I work with young rock musicians in BIMM music academy and that's one of the things I tell my students - "When you're onstage it's not about you. It's about making everyone in the band feel good. If you can do that you'll work!"
Nice story.

That is a great, great line. Several other good ones there, too. Thanks for posting. Monk should be in the dictionary under "genius".
Made me smile.
