In Reply to: RE: Stern's Saint Saens Organ Symphony on Reference Recordings: best final pages ever, if you're still awake by that point posted by jdaniel@jps.net on December 05, 2016 at 07:14:33
Many years ago, a poster here presented an amazingly comprehensive review of the commercial recordings of this symphony. This included an elaborate series of rankings depending on the criteria used. I remember he found the best overall to be that of Pretre and the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra on EMI, with organist Maurice Durufle, from 1964. I'm not usually a fan of classical music, recording, performer or composer rankings, but there's no denying this guy did a fine job. As do Pretre et al. on EMI.

Yes, it was just a bit before my time here, so I'm sorry the original post is gone. But seeing all those posts from the likes of Clark, Big B, et al, really brought back the nostalgia! Big B's reference to what "obscure" recording Clark would be sure to bring up reminds me of one of the recordings in my own collection I should re-listen to:
I don't have too many Kobayashi recordings because he tends to be a "shouter" as he conducts, and that's something I've really lost patience with over the years (even if I do still make an exception for Celibidache - LOL!).
OTOH, I'm no longer quite so interested in "ordinal rankings" (didn't that used to be part of figure skating judging?), but I'm sure I'd appreciate the knowledge, work and effort that was put in to the post.
For me, music is not gymnastics or figure skating. But this guy did such an elaborate, detailed job it was impressive. I'm afraid I'm too lazy/busy with actual work to hunt for his post.
