NPR: 200 discs, 22 pounds, 240 hours of music ... and $400!
Follow Ups:
Given how much I find Mozart quite boring apart from some late masterpieces, this would be purgatory for me....
I just ordered this box. Lots of 20th century works I don't have, but there's a duplication of maybe 15 CDs I do already have, the Ravel, Debussy, and Schoenberg for instance. What are you going to do? I am looking forward to it. 67 discs.
I have problems working through even a 10 CD box set. It doesn't suit my way of selecting music which is very much in accordance with my "muse" at the time.
It also strikes me that out of x hundred recordings it is very likely that a large proportion will not be the finest as practical licensing precludes this. So, from an enthusiast's point of view, it's likely to be a cherry picking exercise.
So, not for me, but I do understand the point made by the compiler (producr?) that this set is meant for institutions. May lots of them buy it.
I don't know if ALL of them have to be the very best performances (and who would agree with all of the choices). But the buyer will likely get a chance to listen to a lot of music that he or she probably has never heard. If other performances are then wanted, there are plenty of other choices.
I bought this "Beethoven Complete Masterpieces" set when it was selling for about $35:
https://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Complete-Masterpieces-Germany-Limited/dp/B000NDEMAI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477604923&sr=8-1&keywords=beethoven+masterpieces
There are many superb performances in the box (Missa Solemnis, symphonies and concertos with Zinman, Bronfman, Tetzlaff; string quartets with the Alexander String Quartet; Fidelio conducted by Masur) along with some others that were pretty good but not the best. It was an incredible deal, and I then purchased better performances of some of the other pieces that I didn't already own.
Ditto with the 22-disc Sony set of Stravinsky conducting his own music that cost me about $30, and there were a bunch of pieces there that I'd never heard before.
So if you want to spend $400 to get everything Mozart wrote and then shop later for alternate performances, it's a great deal.
And only $400! With 2 books, even. A true bargain, I do believe.
But! Are the pursists going to be happy with this behemoth? And will
they buy it?
