After trying to sit through his latest effort above, perhaps so. :-(
Follow Ups:
Heard the Wagner Ring in Budapest. He was fine.
on Tidal last night. Sound quality is quite good, and the horns are definitely not HIP! It has to be the most unusual reading of a Mahler symphony I have heard--especially the Nachtmusik II. He must be coming to Mahler from a different direction or tradition than anyone else. Anyway, did you notice that on the back cover of the CD case on Amazon a tag declares "Mahler Edition Vol. 1"? Could be a cycle for the ages:)
after stopping it last night after the first movement.
Wow, it is a DIFFERENT Mahler. But I'm not enough of a Mahler-ite to have much of an informed opinion. Especially #7.
This guy is going to record them ALL?
If they are ALL this 'different' then it will be an interesting exercise.
Hope they all end up on TIDAL or QOBUZ so I don't have to buy them. In fact, after hearing this one I likely wouldn't. Good thing about streaming is you get to try different things, even stuff you end up not liking.
In fairness, after listening to the whole thing I must admit it really wasn't bad at all, just DIFFERENT.
"Mahler's music stems from the same world as that of Haydn and Mozart. He expresses the same emotions as Haydn - only that, thanks to technical developments, he had another kind of orchestra at his disposal. The two composers are closely related in terms of drama and lyricism. For me, this means: when I conduct Haydn, I want to bring out the Mahler in Haydn, and when I conduct Mahler, the Haydn in Mahler. This is by no means an easy task: in Mahler - as opposed to Haydn - many members of the audience expect to be washed over by a wave of exuberant emotion. Likewise, for the conductor and the orchestra, Mahler can be a great seducer, since he was a great instrumental motivator."
Well, that's one way to approach Mahler I suppose.
. . . as he incorporates more and more HIP voodoo into his Haydn and Mozart interpretations. His big box of complete Haydn Symphonies on the Nimbus label was fine (if problematically recorded), but it's been downhill ever since!
Actually, I'd like to hear that new Mahler 7th, but it doesn't appear as if it's hi-rez?
.
Mahler #7, that is.Not sure more bits or higher a sampling rate is gonna help! =:-0
