Lots o' departures from the text (Ooh! he's improvising!) - which I imagine some folks will appreciate more than others will. For instance, consider that all Ozone's improvising really does change the proportions in the work (aaak! the structure!), and I guess each listener will have to decide how he/she feels about that. It seems to me that Ozone's performance could mainly be for listeners who have heard the work once too often! ;-)
Follow Ups:
Yes, his whole point was to Improvise.
The whole piece is like a written Improv anyway, IMO...
He was great on the 2 Concerts I played.
And some of the really fast, technical stuff he did better and cleaner than MTT,
and 2 others, one a French Pianist ( whose name I forget, but someone you know ), and Jeffery Khane.
Ozone was using a new VERY expensive Yamaha Piano.
He liked it so much he bought one.
Check out "Virtuosi", with Gary Burton and Ozone.
All Classical Themes they arranged, and improvised on.
He also wore a very nice silk shirt, classy, and in keeping with Pops Concerts, nothing Flashy.
BTW, I'm not surprised he bought the Yamaha - some of those Yamahas can sound fabulous IMHO.
