Listen to the music. If you like it, all is good, be happy. Doesn't matter what era or style it is.If you don't like it, look at the accompanying insert or recording info.
This will explain why you don't like it.
If the composer lived before 1900, the recording is probably HIPsh*t. Otherwise, you'd like it. HIPsh*t is irritating, but not life threatening. Get rid of the music, just so you don't listen to it again by accident.
If the composer was writing after 1890, it's probably modernist drek as opposed to good modernist music. Modernist drek is extremely toxic. Wash out your ears with soapy water, take some strong drugs and sleep for 10 hours before trying to listen to music again. Destroy the music completely (or send it anonymously to an enemy).

Howard Hanson romantic symphony.
Sergei Prokofiev symphony number 5, Lt. Kjie suite, Love for three Oranges suite
I could go on, but yeah - these are exceptions to your rule.

Hmmmm ... what is my rule? There is good modernist music and modernist drek. I made that clear.
There is also good romantic era music and romantic era drek, but the question was about modernist music.
Personally, I like a lot of music by modernist era composers.
