Frankly, I find it rather artistic myself:
Follow Ups:
A very fine cover.
... a hybrid instrument. Part string, part wind.
But not Tchaikowsky (not that there's anything wrong with that).
A violin on a chair.
I posted it below, but what the heck.
Yup, could be both.
When we think of album cover design, it seems that there is not much topic that one can choose from on a collective maestro works such as this one. I wonder what those people who critisized the nude cover design would use if they were the cover designer, other than Milstein's portrait or a violin.
Urania Arts? Urania?
Someone must have noticed the nude looks like a violin.....
Actually it looks like she has a left flank mass. Above and to the left of, um, hurania
There have been nudes on album covers since the early days of vinyl. Classical, rock, jazz, new age, whatever. Actually, there's one much more revealing album cover right now on Vinyl Asylum (although it will probably be nuked soon by a mod).Link to prudes going ape, please.

Sadly pulled by a censor police.
Now I get all nostalgic when I see it! ;-)
These comments remind me of some of the ones I read here: some folks can't be bothered to go to the trouble of actually listening to the music, but, wow, can they ever comment on the album covers! ;-)
Yeah - I saw the post on Vinyl Asylum. Totally tasteless! And to think that I wasted my precious time opening up that post and reading it! LOL!
I hadn't looked at the comments. Morons.
There is a thriving market for the many, many nude covers from the vinyl era. This one is actually pretty tame in comparison to some. I mean, do you remember the John and Yoko full frontals for their album "Unfinished"? And the old Hendrix "Electric Ladyland" featured a lot of electric ladies. The all-fem quartet Bond had a pretty racy cover for one of their CDs. I know there are a lot more. I don't keep up with them.
I'm all for gratuitous female nudity in classical music. Except by fat opera singers. I'm just as happy for them to keep their clothes on.

I guess the label thinks that classical music lovers are horny adolescents (of all ages!).
. . . have Chabas' "September Morn" on its cover? Why were people in Europe so much more comfortable with nudity in 1911 (when the picture was painted) than folks in the US were then or are now? Maybe it has something to do with our Puritan heritage? I'll never figure it out.
EDIT: It looks as if Westminster must have done some pre-Photoshop color correction on the Boult Schumann Symphonies cover:

Renoir vs. Penthouse
I used to think that some of the "pictorials" in Penthouse were very artistically conceived too - but of course I don't expect everyone to share that view! ;-)
Renoir vs. Penthouse
The one I remember didn't look a ALL like that!
In fact, he was so shy that he always seemed to be hiding himself behind his violin even when dressed in a tux and white tie!
Lucky for us he used a body double for the picture!!!
