It's as if Ansermet raised the "center of gravity" of Brahms's orchestration in this performance. It's certainly a valid view, although, as you say, one turns to other performances to get more of the latent power in the score. In addition, the Ansermet recording was our (my wife's and my) first recorded performance of "Nanie", another truly genius choral work which, unaccountably, barely seems to register with the general public.
