I'm reading the flu?!
Wow.

Genius?
Oh, yes. That's right. In the pop/rock world, anyone making any kind of noise whatsoever and thereby gaining public attention is an "artist", a "recording artist", and a "genius".
And, in our post-60s relativistic world, we're all geniuses.
Rock on.

Prince was one of the best ever at "packaging" his music product..... He was able to present himself as a "Michael Jackson alternative", without being too much like Jackson..... Aside from that, his music never did much for me, it never struck me as having much "depth" which for me makes music "great"....... (But this is so subjective.... The person next to me might think Prince's music had "depth" in spades.... And I can't really argue.)
Genius is subjective..... Prince is original.... He's unique.... He was effective in presenting his product..... I'd give him the "genius" label, since so few artists have been able to attain all those attributes. Like Bruce Springsteen, not my cup of tea, but appreciate the body of work
If you ever have time, go back and listen to Prince's very first album For You. Produced, Arranged and Composed by Prince. He was a ridiculous arranger.
A body of work indeed!
Maybe you could post some of your own music so we can hear just how much better you are than all these incompetent modernists and pop musicians.
Weren't you gushing over System Of A Down here just a few years ago?

...I watched the ABC World News tonight and they did at least 10 minutes - half their broadcast - on Prince's death, his music and the tributes from luminaries like President Obama.
maybe not you.

He was a musical genius. His work from I'm Yours Through Sign of the Times was monumental...not only that, but his influence on other musicians was also staggering. See recent article to see what others think....really a genius. May not be your cup of tea musically but his talent is undeniable. I just picked up his Crystal Ball release two weeks ago. I had not listened to Prince in years. The last disc in the set was all acoustic guitar. BRILLIANT. I sent a disc I compiled out to a HS friend today and then a few hours later I heard he had died. Just completely shook me up. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert a few times. I wish I had seen him more.

...no we're not all geniuses.
But then I'm only speaking for myself.
Hey theres no Prince in my collection but he was very talented. He played many instruments, had a wide vocal range, produced and wrote for others often with a pseudonym. He definitely had his own sound too. I never saw him live but did see a DVD and he was a great guitarist when stretching out live. He did Purple Rain at 25 again not my thing but it was pretty well done. Ward you're being to hard on the BeaverET

Sources say that Prince actually was a very interesting polymath of sorts. Maybe A BIT more poly than math, but polymath nonetheless.
RIP
My hope is that he was not in the same vein, as Michael Jackson?
R.I.P.
it's wait and see.
