Now assistant to The Dude in LA, she'll take over Sir Simon's old spot as principal conductor of the City of Birmingham SO.

better than Alsop?
I haven't heard her, so I can't say for sure. But, based on my knowledge of Alsop, I'd still give 100-to-1 odds that Mirga is better! ;-)
So far her Brahms are not to my liking and some of her interviews I saw, she comes off extremely shallow.
I have read not so nice things about her on this board but I was wondering if that was a gender discrimination since she's not the prettiest thing but I, too start to wonder.
I hope to see a female conductor make it into the top orchestra in my life time not as a token female but based on a real musical merit.
Give here ONE MORE CHANCE!
This is a great rendition of Gershwin Piano Concerto in F.
OK, IMNSHO and YMMV and if you REALLY don't like Marin Alsop, pretend it's SFO with MTT at the piano. ;-)
I haven't tried her 20th century composer work.
I missed her Gershwin program last year at CSO with John Kimura Parker
I'd reckon Thibaudet's Gershwin could be very good, indeed. It's been years I have listened to Concerto in F. I recall I liked Ormandy/Entremont set waaay back in the 60s.
I am not completely giving up on Alsop but I approach her work with a low expectation these days. :)
I only have MTT's Gershwin with LA Phil. SFO set is better?
Like this recording was. . .
(Sorry - couldn't resist!)
Just trying to get a LITTLE support for Marin here.
After all, Lenny liked her.
here's the video of Lenny and Marin. She shows a lot of confidence and loved her sassy attitude.
I've always thought that she was overall a much better conductor than Alsop but never got the publicity. I guess her story wasn't as compelling in media/music circles. I collect her Naxos releases and enjoy them immensely.
I think Baltimore would have been much happier with Ms. Falletta.
I checked out her discography and she's got a ton!
Any particular you would recommend ?
Curious about her Rite of Spring.
In fairness, Alsop might be better in live concert. I have never been able to attend any when she was in town.

Just askin'.
They certainly don't Ask for any $.
And Women Orchestra Players get exactly 1/2 Union Scale.
It's God's Way...
This isn't unfair. Women are better at that kind of work.

I see her as a serious candidate to take over the L.A. Phil when Gustavo eventually leaves.
or is he already going somewhere else?
everyone moves on at some point
That's a Long Wait.
Yes he has. He is the exception not the rule. But I would be quite happy for the L.A. Phil and Dudamel to stay together for just as long. Who knows? Maybe he will stay another 20 years. There really is no better place to be in this day than L.A.
Seems Ozawa just left.
He can Guest-Conduct anywhere he wants, he won't make more money or have more fun than in LA.
Not interested in the NYPO vacancy. Seems no one wants it at the moment. Can't be simply the Hall or the dagger politics.
And he was seriously considered last time around too. It would be more accurate to say, no one wants it for more than about nine seasons. The only recent music director there who was probably forced out before he wanted to leave was Kurt Masur. Before that, you would have to go back to Dmitri Mitropoulos.
Sinopoli said no. Barenboim said no. The list goes on and on...
There's a powerful board and ultra-wealthy donors, and they aren't going to be pushed around by some star prima donna, and the prima donnas know it and stay away. Alas, rather than go for someone energetic, imaginative and young but lesser-known, and maybe even American, they usually like their MDs conservative, older and European with (they assume) a healthy respect for their authority. Alan Gilbert was a special case with his family ties and history with the orchestra.
Contrast that with the Baltimore Symphony, who essentially made Marin Alsop their MD for life.
Good insight! I agree. Donors a Wall Street collective.
He's actually not that well paid relatively speaking.

I doubt it. she's a terrific talent but not someone who will fill seats with her sex appeal. Maybe it will be the other way around. OTOH maybe more wives will go with their husbands to concerts. Now that their gender will be represented at the podium.
It's been my (limited) experience that the wives are usually the supporters of the arts, and they have to drag their husbands to the concerts. From watching the attendees, I've noticed many of these ladies are unaccompanied or in groups without men.
i have not noticed that. I will have to pay more attention to that. What I tend to notice is that you have your white crowd that is mostly old to very old and your younger crowd that is mostly Asian. I haven't noticed any disparity between men and women. But I can't say that I have been taking note
I live in Tallahassee, FL, home of the Florida State University School of Music, which I'm told is one of the top music schools in the country, and I have noticed the different age groups you mention. Mostly old folks like me (but I've been going to concerts for 50 years, so at one time I was one of the young ones) and a smaller percentage of young folks, in our case mainly music students, many of whom are Asian these days.
I love sitting behind the music students during a concert. Their comments are so entertaining. When Hilary Hahn gave a recital here the students around me went crazy!
She is pretty fantastic live
A poster at the Naim forum informed me that since the departure of Andris Nelsons CBSO has been trying out different younger conductors. He is a subscriber of the Symphony and dreaded losing Nelsons to BSO.
He has recently attended one of her concert with Sibelius and Rachmaninov program with Beatrice Rana and that he was mighty impressed with her.
