My wife and I recently saw Krzysztof Urbanski conduct the SF Symphony in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto (with AX) and Dvorak's 9th. First time for both of these works for my wife. He was extremely impressive in his command of the scores and the orchestra - really good concert, even if these are huge warhorses. He conducts on a fuller time basis in Trondheim and Indianapolis. Hopefully he will be back next year.
I am sure someone will mention Robin Ticciati, who is(was) a protégé of Colin Davis, and seems to be building quite a career.
Follow Ups:
Heard good thing about him but my schedule hasn't been able to accommodate to catch one of their shows.
Conducting old war horse like Emperor Concerto is tough. Because I have in my mind how the piece should be played so if the expectation isn't met, there are always some disappointment.
I have heard of Ticcati, so I need to check him out. he's got a Haydn Symphony LP out, IIRC.
I see Linn label has his Brahms Symphony release.
is this any good?
I haven't heard either set, but based on the Berlioz I've heard so far, I'll stay as far away as I can from the Brahms and Schumann!
Actually, Chris, you might be surprised. First, let me emphatically state two things: (1) as you can guess from my moniker, I'm picky when it comes to Brahms; (2) try as I might, I cannot warm up to HIP, especially in late-Classical and early-Romantic repertoire. (My favorite Mozart conductors? Bruno Walter and George Szell.) So I approached Ticciati's Brahms SACD on Tudor with some trepidation. (Serenade No. 1, Haydn Variations, and a Hungarian Dance sampler tray) I think you would be hard pressed to find much evidence of twee HIP pretensions. The sound of the orchestra is dark and rich--very old-school. I wouldn't pretend to predict what he would do with the four symphonies, but the Tudor disc might allay some of your concerns. YMMV, of course.
Have you had a chance to listen to his latest Haydn Symphonies album?
