But your mention of Meistersinger sparks a desire to confess my own ignorance of that work. I've heard only excerpts - sometimes quite substantial, but not even a complete act! The shame! ;-)

I realized this when attending a Ring cycle - the first 3 operas are truly "music dramas", while Gotterdamerung is actually more of a traditional style of opera, with more set pieces. However, the music is incredibly rich in detail and composed with sure hand of a master. I love Rheingold, but it is of an earlier, and somewhat cruder, Wagnerian style.
Yes Chris, you are absolutely correct on that. That is indeed where Wagner laid it down, and came back to finish it much later.
