Although stylistically very different, as one would expect, I've always enjoyed the settings by Dvorak and Szymanowski. Both are well represented in the catalog. Robert Shaw made decent recordings of both for Telarc (the Szymanowski is coupled with the Poulenc setting). Simon Rattle's EMI recording has a durable presence in the catalog, but I've not heard it. Perhaps someone else could provide an opinion.
Follow Ups:
I strongly second the Szymanowski Stabat Mater. A lovely and unusual work. I have both the Eattle and Shaw and think the Rattle is quite a bit better.
For the Dvorak, I have Belohlavek (Chandos), Sinopoli, Macal, Shaw, and Kubelik, and I used to have Smetacek on LP. (I also used to have the Sawallisch CD's, but haven't heard that set in a long time.) I've had difficulty getting the Kubelik to sound decent (a DG primitive multi-mirophone-era example for all to hear!), but, aside from that one, all of these recordings sound at least decent. One recording I'm sorry I didn't hear is the Harnoncourt SACD on RCA/BMG - based on his performances of the last three Dvorak symphonies with the RCOA. These big choral works really benefit from hi-rez multi-channel sound. I guess I waited too long, becuase this albem is now being offered for $260 on Amazon.
Strange that I have so many recordings of this work, since Madeline does not like it at all!
Chris -
The Harnoncourt has had very limited availability - in fact, I think that it may have been withdrawn almost immediately after release. I managed to dig up a copy, which cost me about $60, and I thought that it was money wasted. The sonics are fine, but the performance never really caught fire. BTW, there are two Amazon listings for this, and one of them is considerably cheaper (but still more than it's worth, IMO).
Like you, I'd enjoy the Kubelik more if it sounded better - the chorus is particularly poorly recorded, although the solo quartet is superb. You might want to give Rilling a try:
