"Shoot the Conductor - Too Close to Monteux, Szell and Ormandy" by Ansell Brusllow - who was assistant concertmaster for Szell and then concertmaster for Ormandy before taking up a conducting career himself. Published this June. I am sure that most of you who ordered Szell book discussed below from Amazon got an email from Amazon notifying you of this book. Looks interesting.

IIRC it ran on the next-to-last page of a print issue of TAS.

. . . with the Netherlands Radio Orchestra before he died:
Also a very nice Nutcracker with the SkD:
I didn't care as much for the recordings he did as conductor of the St. Louis Symphony.
I preferred his recordings with the St. Louis SO even though they were not as well recorded. They did a great Turangalila et al..
. . . I came across a CD I'd completely forgotten that I had: the Vonk/Hague Residentie Orchestra recording of Bruckner's Sixth on the Dutch Vanguard label. I don't remember anything about it (!), but I'll be re-listening to at least part of it very soon.
As far as his St. Louis recordings are concerned, I didn't hear the Messiaen Turangalila, but the more standard repertoire ones I did hear seemed awfully dry and multi-miked, and I just couldn't get past that.
Example: "Was this a conspiration to read my beat?" There's a whole site devoted to it:
I got it with the Szell book. When I finish the Szell book I will read it and give my review

It was an honor to play under him while an undergrad bassoon major at North Texas. Brusilow left Philadelphia to lead the Dallas Symphony in the early 70's but got fed up after three or so seasons and then became conductor of the symphony of what was then called North Texas State University in Denton. He stayed there, other than a few years at SMU, until his retirement a few years ago. A one million dollar endowment was given in his honor.
I recall him as a brilliant violinist and his recording of the Meditation from Thais is still played very often locally. He is probably about 85 or so now and still doing well.
His book should be very interesting and I look forward to it.
My wife went there when it was Texas Women's
