. . . especially the works from the classical period (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven). I don't remember the Schubert too well, but I like the Brahms concertos with Fleisher too, even though they aren't my absolute favorite performances.
In the Schumann symphonies, I just can't abide Szell's schoolmarmish changes to the orchestration (even though they're not nearly as extensive as Mahler's!).
The problem I have with many of the Szell recordings is the engineering, once he switched from Epic to CBS. I know I seem to be out in left field on this, but that Wagner disc features some of the worst multi-microphoning I've ever heard on disc. SO inferior to other roughly contemporaneous accounts such as Leinsdorf/LAPO and Steinberg/Pittsburgh.
I loved your comment, "I am not that big of a fan of the Szell Des Knaben Wunderhorn - I think the singing is over inflected." Gosh - do you think? ;-)

Yes, I hesitated about adding those for that reason. But they are effective performances, and I am not sure I have heard better.

if he knew ANYTHING at All about Orchestration...
We played the 2nd Sym in The SF Ballet Orch, one full hour,
no breaks between movements, playing ALL the time, couldn't even swab out Clarinets!
I'm guessing Szell thinned it out a little.
Beautiful Slow Movement in 2nd Sym.
