I used Musical Heritage Society. Same concept, but mostly classical. Some of my favorite recordings came from MHS. They are now gone, too.
In high school circa 1964. Originally they only issued baroque recordings, mostly French and German. This was the era of the Baroque revival. First heard many Bach cantatas via MHS. At some point they sent around a survey asking what other types of music people were interested in, and they then branched out into all classical genres.
This was brought up on General....
I bought a record from there back in the 1970s that had such a big dish warp (measured roughly half an inch), some friends who saw it called it a "birdbath". (I was able to spin the thing easily on a flat table. Didn't actually try playing it on a turntable.)
I sent the record back for exchange, the new one was fine. (It was a Herb Alpert album.) In retrospect, I would have kept it, as a "conversation piece".
Played that game through out High School, LP's. Loved getting those initial shipments! And then perusing the catalog every month! Fulfilling the requirement and then starting all over again!Wasn't bad for rock and folk. It wasn't until later that I learned that there was a difference in classical recordings. I wound up with way too much Perahia and Bernstein.
Bankrupt...
