Ye Watchers and Holy Ones and Best-n-Britest!
I am going to record some demo tracks for a young soprano. She is a bit on the slight of stature side and is suited for ingenue/"best friend" roles, if that makes sense. Brunhilde or Kundry, she is not... .
At the moment I am not really full of ideas (but I do have a few), so I am asking for suggestions, say three Broadway and three Opera. No limit as to when the songs were written.
So, those who wish can play agent, casting director, or producer.
TIA,
John Marks

It is a very nice thing you are doing for her!
I can't speak to the Broadway side but as for opera let me suggest she select at least five contrasting arias suitable for her fach, two in Italian and one each in French, German, and English. The aria in English should be relatively recent; Britten or Barber for example.
Audition announcements are found on the Classical Singer and YAP Tracker websites to name a few. Each company will have different requirements if they ask for a CD.
I wish her well.
John, my Italian spelling ain't what it used to be, but how 'bout Zerlina's "Bati, Bati . . ." from Don Giovanni?

Walk on By (Bachrach/David) This is a GREAT tune and not an easy vocal. But in the right hands (vocal chords?) it can be outstanding and a wonderful vocal showcase.
But "Walk on By" is great, less over-exposed, and does not make you want to slit your wrists, so: Thanks!
John
My daughter, who also has a light voice, studied with some good New York teachers. I agree with the Mozart arias and suggest Aaron Copland/ Emily Dickinson "Heart, We Will Forget Him". Or how about Noel Coward's "I'll Follow My Secret Heart", or Sigmund Romberg's "April Snow" from Up in Central Park?
FWIW & YMMV (non-Broadways noted):

Tea for Two

The soprano has gone to attend to the burial of her grandmother in a foreign country, so, this will wait, but, I am sure that she will be touched and very grateful.
"She's a good Sheila, and not stuck up!"

But not for me

Hi John,
Coming in from left field:
Berlioz: Le jeune patre breton
Strauss: Im Abendrot
Rogers & Hammerstein: Something Wonderful (King & I)
M. Wilson: Till There Was You (Music Man)
Just a few of my faves. :-)

Three of the all time greatest (imo) female sidekick songs from Broadway:
A person could develop a cold (Loesser); I'm just a girl who can't say no (Rodgers/Hammerstein); A boy like that (Bernstein/Sondheim).
There are many more recent good ones too, but hey, there once was a golden age.
Everytime we say goodbye
Theme from Valley of the Dolls
A House is not a Home
All I Ask of You (Phantom of the Opera). Duet with...?
Bailero (Chants d'Auvergne)
Morgen, Strauss
Bailero is great.
I recorded an audition for my daughter it must have been 8 or 9 years ago of La Delaissado. What a song!

Also, she is mostly classical/lieder/sacred oriented, and at this point is more interested in what the deciders might want to hear.
She's a paid church singer and a voice teacher and I have heard her do a knockout Bist du Bei Mir.
But she's looking to make a Broadway/Opera/Popera demo to cast the net wider.
Does that make sense?
JM
So I'm assuming that if part of her demo is for opera, then she would want arias, rather than songs? And if she's got a light voice, some of the following arias might work:Many more possibilities of course. . .
- Dvorak: Rusalka's Song to the Moon (after all, even Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Weber sings this one!)
- One of the Despina arias from Cosi, Barbarina from Marriage of Figaro, etc. (i.e.,, light Mozart)
- I think one of the nuns in Poulenc's "Dialogues des Carmélites" is an ingenue type with a matching aria - can't remember which one though! ;-)
