For my car system, it sounded excellent.

Aram Khachaturian: Sabre Dance
Boston Pops Orchestra / John Williams
Philips 426247
Very good performance--I own a mint EMI copy with Khatchaturian
8:02 am
Ludwig van Beethoven: Consecration of the House Overture Op.124
Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig / Kurt Masur
Philips 438706
This is superb, vigorous, full blooded, fast not furious authoritative performance. Are you guys familiar with other Masur Beethoven overtures?

Gil Shaham in Conversation: The KUSC Artist of the Morning talks about finding more fun in music with each passing year.
He cited Lorin Maazel.
The legendary violinist plays the Mendelssohn Concerto with the L.A. Phil and Gustavo Dudamel tonight at the Hollywood Bowl.
I won't go tonight, but will hear Yundi Li on 8.6.15

KUSC ARTIST OF THE MORNING - Gil Shaham: Pablo de Sarasate - Carmen Fantasy
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Claudio Abbado
DG 457583
Absolutely beautiful but violin is very forwardly mixed. I have Heifetz, Anne Sophie Mutter and Sarah Chang outdoors in Berlin w Domingo. Do you have a preference?
Follow Ups:
I never miss a chance to hear Shaham play live.
That set has been my standard for 40 years. First on LP, then CD, now SACD.
Hurwitz gave it a withering, vulgar review, and I lost a great deal of respect for him.
Peace,
Tom E
All I hear is the magical tone quality of the orchestra and the integrity of the conductor. Yeah, this is one instance where I don't agree with Dave at all. They were recorded in quad and really sound great with their discrete rear channels.
(I'm talking about the original set - not the redo he did later on, with the "musicologically correct" scores (double appearance of the trio in the Fifth, etc.).)
