...the average time spent listening is 3 hours for everyone in the US over 13 years of age.
That is a reason for hope in the music industry.
A few years ago, people predicted actual books would go away and be replaced by digital readers.
The sale of digital readers (Kindle and Nook) as well as iPads has dropped recently - looks like we'll continue to have hard copy books.
Follow Ups:
A lot of that three hours of daily music listening could just be passive - I'm guessing here, but folks do have their radios on while driving, sometimes they listen while they're working, studying, etc.
Digital reader sales could have dropped because folks don't have to replace them as frequently as they used to. BTW, how are the sales of hard copy books doing in comparison?
I'm not necessarily arguing with you, but I'm not really convinced that there's cause for optimism either, especially as old folks die off.
"There's a book category that's showing big growth in 2013 but it's not ebooks.
Hardcover book sales in the U.S. are up over 10% through the first eight months of 2013, according to the latest numbers from the Association of American Publishers. At the same time, adult ebook sales are only up 4.8%; all U.S. ebook sales, including children's and religious ebooks, are down about 5%."
