I know some of you are already well aware that babe musicians existed in the thrilling days of yesteryear, and that the promotion of babes is by no means a recent phenomenon (even though babe marketing has certainly taken off in the last decade or so). But I kind of need to be reminded of it every so often, and I was looking for pictures of Maria Tipo, contemporaneous to her Vox recordings of Mozart Concerti and Scarlatti Sonatas from the 50's (pre-stereo) as I just ripped these CD's onto iTunes. The picture I decided to use for my "roll your own" album cover was this one:
Man, that looks like some publicity photo from a '50's Hollywood starlet. And that Sophia-Loren-like lower lip - yes! Tipo was quite the 50's babe!
Follow Ups:
Streaming it now and REALLY enjoying it.
Also, her later recordings of Scarlatti (i.e., from the late 70's through the 80's - after she got old and put on weight - those Ricordi and EMI recordings) are not in the least inferior to her earlier Vox recordings, and of course they're recorded much better!

Unlike Stalin though, I never quite got onto the wavelength of her playing. And, to be fair, in her younger days, she really DID look better than the babushka picture that you posted. ;-)
