"Bout twenty years ago I went to a record sale at a collector's house. A bit OCD, he had a massive collection of Presley including every album he ever recorded. He knew the value though so I could only buy a few.
But he also had a complete Julie London collection. Not ony a copy of every album she recorded, but also the stereo and mono copies, as well as alternate covers and such. I was so impressed with the effort he put forth I purchased the entire set.....
Follow Ups:
Always cool to find those types of collectors.
I'm obsessive about trying to obtain a 1st pressing of anything. Even better when I find them at the yard sale where the owner could care less and sells a stamper for 3 bucks!
The album I picked up is the black label which I suspect is a 2nd run? Do you have the blue label? Mine is a VG+ copy with just a few random stiches. It has that rare hypnotic effect some diva albums(Ella,Billie) seem to project. As the back cover notes mention-" Julie had a voice that says, come hither".
I bought the collection and it lies somewhere in my storeroom. AS I have some 40K LP's, hard to say what have, although I do have multiple coppies of Julie is My Name. It's unfortunately at the bottom of a pallet!
And like you, I get obsessed with finding first pressings or as close to them as I can, hence I have many multiple copies. Somehow, to my ears, first pressings seem to sound better.
I still run into this guy at sales and swap meets. I remember once I was looking at another London LP and he looks over and tells me that that copy is in better shape than the one he sold me ! This was 15 years after he sold the collection to me !
He had to sell because of a divorce, and last I checked he was collecting Nancy Wilson. As he says "common and cheap, but enough of a challenge"
