For MD to say or imply, seriously or facetiously, that MJQ messed up
Percy Heath's playing indicates to me that MD is/was even more of an
egotistical moron that I previously thought. Percy Heath is one of the
dozen or so best bassists of 20th century jazz. There has probably not
been a more musically acomplished quartet in the history of 20th century
jazz than MJQ. There has probably not been a more highly over-rated
jazz musician in the 20th century than MD.

but I sure appreciated his talents more with say, The Heath Brothers than with the MJQ, both
of whom I saw live. It's purely a matter of taste.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew you'd show up to slam MD.
You're as predictable as the MJQ grew to be.

Almost anybody who ever counted in jazz played for, with or in MD's band at one point or another. He might have been an egotistical moron as you said, but he had a lot of influence over what happened in jazz before he passed away :). You may not like it, but it just happened that way. And as a side note, some of his music is actually quite remarkable. But that is not just my opinion. I am also of the opinion that he had his right to dislike some peoples playing.
